What's in a Name
So, what is up with the name of this blog. If you know me at all you know I am a stay-at-home mom--often referred to as a homemaker. I'm not a fan of the word homemaker but I don't really feel like a domestic goddess or any of the other silly or clever things stay-at-home moms come up with to call themselves. It seems like you should get more than two showers a week to call yourself a goddess. Anyway, I don't feel like I can call myself a homemaker either. I mean, have you seen my house? We still have piles of boxes scattered here and there. The only furniture in the living room is folding table. Okay, there's a lamp and a couple of bookcases in there as well. The hearth and the mantle are cluttered along with all the other horizontal surfaces in the house. I have good intentions for these areas but so far those intentions have not blossomed into actions. The point is I am not much of a homemaker. I can't sew, I don't like cooking and dusting hasn't been done in who knows how long. I consider myself a mom. On forms that ask for occupation I put mother and under employer I list my children's names. That's what I do. I feed the kids and play and take them places and feed them some more. I think three quarters of my time is spent preparing, serving, and cleaning up after meals or snacks. I know I'm not the only mom who feels that way. Having said all that, I read recently in my patriarchal blessing that I'll be a good wife, mother, and...homemaker. So I'll have to start working on that. Maybe in a few years I'll have to change the name of my blog.
